HAIR RAISING TALES

Hair Raising Tales came out of the blue when the artistry of cornrows stunned me at a camp where talented fingers were rescuing little girls after swimming and before mothers picked them up.  I looked at one glowing face and asked the question “Is there a braider in the house?”

Marveling at my own wit I knew it deserved at least one appropriate illustration and the next thing I knew a fire was born.  The series grew into an enjoyable comic relief with works that made me giggle while I created them.  Eventually, though the reality of the powerful and political undertones started to speak and the work started to change.  I realized as the work ended that even in my post 9-11 work I could not avoid the most powerful reality:  “Hair Raising Times.”
